By the early 1950s, travelers in a hurry and on a budget made Santa Fe’s El Capitan one of its most popular – and crowded – streamliners. As the speedy and economical running mate of the Super Chief, the train was a favorite with families and business travelers, regularly handling 14 or more cars daily with no let-up in sight. Second and third sections were needed during peak summer and holiday travel times, and riders were still being turned away.
To meet demand and upgrade service, new Budd-built 48-seat coaches were assigned to El Capitan as soon as they arrived in the fall of 1953. In March of 1954, a new level of luxury began as the first of the “Big Dome” lounge cars joined the popular train, a hint of more improvements to come. El Capitan would handle the lion’s share of coach passengers with this updated consist until July of 1956, when the all-new Hi-Level cars took over.
Quickly reassigned to equipment pools, former El Capitan cars would be found on the Chief, Texas Chief, Chicagoan, Kansas Cityan, Grand Canyon and others through 1971. Many went on to long careers in Amtrak service, and today, several coaches, lunch counter diners and Big Domes have been preserved.

Santa Fe’s El Capitan was the first choice for travelers between Chicago and Los Angeles, reaching new levels of luxury in 1954 when the first “Big Domes” arrived. Capturing the spirit of this great train, our HO replica includes four new cars – six authentic models in all – that later served on other Santa Fe streamliners. New 300-Class F7s in full Warbonnet® colors will also be available, along with a new Cornerstone Modern Brick Santa Fe Station kit and three Walthers SceneMaster™ passenger figure sets for an authentic model from start to finish.

The early 1950s were exciting times for the Santa Fe, and for anyone lucky enough to be riding the popular El Capitan. Over 40 streamlined cars were assigned to the daily Los Angeles-Chicago trains, while matched A-B-B-A quartets of passenger service Fs kept them on their blistering schedule. With six authentic models, including the new as-built Baggage-Dormitory, 13 Seat Lunch Counter 20 Seat Diner, “Big Dome” Bar Lounge #506-513, 42-Seat Coach-Observation (many of which served other Santa Fe streamliners in later years), and new 300-Class F units, it’s easy to model an authentic consist from start to finish.

Celebrated in magnificent form, the 1954 El Capitan is being offered in TWO Deluxe Edition eight-car sets, each with factory-printed car numbers, both completely railroad-ready, with no work needed for operation or collection.
Taking realism to a new level, Deluxe Edition 1954 El Capitan Baggage-Dormitory and Lunch Counter Diner cars come factory-equipped with an exclusive SoundTraxx® Tsunami® SoundCar™ digital sound decoder and speaker! These authentic sounds come right from the train and include wheels and brakes, opening and closing doors, plus unique arrival and departure announcements!
